چکیده

Norwegian spring-spawning herring are a critical economic resource for multiple nations in the North Atlantic and keystone species of Nordic Seas ecosystem. Given wide areas that occupy, it is difficult to accurately measure population size spatial distribution. Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) was used instantaneously areal density over more than one thousand square kilometers spawning grounds near Ålesund, Norway. In vicinity Ålesund trench peak spawning, significant attenuation signal-to-noise ratio mean sensing range observed after nautical sunset had not been previous OAWRS surveys or other regions. We show this range-dependent decay along given propagation path caused by through dense shoals forming at persisting evening transmissions swimbladder resonance peak. corrected manner consistent with waveguide scattering theory simultaneous downward directed local line-transect measurements region order produce instantaneous wide-area maps. Corresponding measured reductions median azimuth before ambient noise limitation shown be theoretically predictable from densities. Spatial-temporal inhomogeneities distributions seen synoptically imagery standard sparsely spaced during can lead large errors estimated due temporal undersampling.

Feasibility of Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) of Atlantic Cod with Seafloor Scattering Limitations

Recently reported declines in the population of Atlantic cod have led to calls for additional survey methods for stock assessments. In combination with conventional line-transect methods that may have ambiguities in sampling fish populations, Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) has been shown to have a potential for providing accurate stock assessments (Makris N.C., et al. Science 2...

Acoustic Clutter and Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) in Continental Shelf Environments

Acoustic clutter is the primary problem encountered by active sonar systems operating in Continental Shelf environments. Clutter is defined as any return from the environment that stands prominently above the diffuse and temporally decaying reverberation background and so can be confused with or camouflage returns from an intended target such as an underwater vehicle. Many environmental factors...

Instantaneous 3D Continental-Shelf Scale Imaging of Oceanic Fish by Multi-Spectral Resonance Sensing Reveals Group Behavior during Spawning Migration

The migration of extensive social groups towards specific spawning grounds in vast and diverse ocean environments is an integral part of the regular spawning process of many oceanic fish species. Oceanic fish in such migrations typically seek locations with environmental parameters that maximize the probability of successful spawning and egg/larval survival. The 3D spatio-temporal dynamics of t...

Maturity changes in Norwegian spring-spawning herring before, during, and after a major population collapse

The Norwegian spring-spawning herring (Clupea harengus) population collapsed to the state of commercial extinction in the late 1960s; the stock remained at extremely low levels for over two decades, but has recovered fully since the 1980s. It is known that the collapse coincided with strong changes in maturation characteristics. However, the long-term patterns of maturation in this stock have r...

Maximum Likelihood Deconvolution of Beamformed Images with Signal-Dependent Speckle Fluctuations from Gaussian Random Fields: With Application to Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS)

Abstract: Wide area acoustic remote sensing often involves the use of coherent receiver arrays to determine the spatial distribution of sources and scatterers at any instant. The resulting acoustic intensity images are typically corrupted by signal-dependent noise from Gaussian random field fluctuations arising from the central limit theorem and have a spatial resolution that depends on the inc...
